Markus Kamau: An American Musician in East Africa for Over 20 Years

Markus Kamau is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has been active in East Africa’s music scene for over 20 years. His 3 released albums are Swahili explorations of rock, lingala, reggae and roots music. He has recorded with numerous artists including Eric Wainaina, Dave Otieno, Mak’Adem, Barbra Guantai, RKay, Chris Bitok, Rocky Bila, Iddi Achieng, Abbi Nyinza, Gravitti and Kidum. His trademark crowd-pleaser – Wanjiku – was a winner in US Mid-Atlantic Songwriter’s Contest and his song Muthoni was a number one in Kenya. Kamau brought down the house as part of “Ohanglaman” Mak’Adem’s entourage at the 2006 Zanzibar Sauti ya Busara Festival.

Mtaani Nairobi (1998)

This album was produced with guitarist Dave Otieno and features Mark van Rossi (guitars), Jennifer Moncheri (vocals), Twahir Mohamed (sax), John Katana (keys), Ali Makanguru (guitars) and others.



Rock in a Hard Place (2001)

This album features ndombolo guitarist Rocky Bila and atalaka specialist Darzee as well as contributions from drummer/vocalist Kidum and the Hot Rod Band. Robert (“RKay”) Kamanze engineered the rock-lingala amalgamations.


Chants Sans Frontiers (2006)

In 2006, Kamau formed Boda Boda Band with Kidum (drums, vocals), pulling together Gilbert Harusha (bass), Kelly Chome (keyboards), and others. R-Kay produced the album which featured guest artists including Eric Wainaina, Dave Otieno, Chris Bitok, Makadem, Barbra Guantai, Abbi Nyinza, Iddi Achieng and others.
